Davis Chapel

This is an image from the chapel located at the hospital. Shot with the D700, a 20-35mm lens, and I used available light. I decided to experiment with photoshop a little and i like this image the best.

Beverly is a woman that works here in the creative communications department. She operated her framing business from the department. Last week she asked my supervisor, Cameron, and I to photograph some images for a promotional poster. This is the final poster that she will hang in her window.

Internship Slide Edits

So far so good! I've been doing a variety of things while on internship like: shooting photos for promotional posters, portraits, copying slides, black and white printing, processing, etc. This slide is from one of the ladies in my department, Creative Communications. I put the slide on a Bessler copy stand and used a D700 to capture the slide. I uploaded the image and fixed it in photoshop and lightroom. My supervisors here prefer lightroom for most corrections and they're teaching me a lot about it.

I've been scanning in a bunch of images lately because I'm about to go on internship. This is one of the images from my design lab from about a year ago. Our assignment was to capture "monotone images." The purpose of the assignment to be aware of colors. This was shot on transparency film.

The b & w sand dollar and the olive are a 1:1 ratios shot with a D200 and a 55mm lens and an extension tube.
The bone, the shell, and the strawberries are a 1:1 ratio shot with the 5D and a 105mm lens.

Razor

This is a 1:1 ratio of a razor. This was shot with a D300, a 60 mm macro lens, and an SB800 for light.You can even see the hairs stuck on the plastic part below the razors. I think its gross.

My boyfriend's band played two shows this weekend. Since they need some images to help promote their band, they asked me to take some pictures. Hopefully I can get all of them together and do an organized photo shoot. I put this image together after looking at an image I had taken of all of four of them standing together. I think this one looks way more unique than them just standing there.

smashing pumpkins inspiration

This weekend I had an idea to mimic a video that the smashing pumpkins did for their song "thirty-three." Now that I'm done I think I will try again, but I still wanted to post my 1st attempt. A few things I will do different: take more images, choreograph my movements better, and try a few different scenes. All in all it was fun and I will try again and make it better. This is one of my macro shots for this week. I like how the image makes you feel hot just looking at it. The burnt matches add a nice subtle feeling. I shot this with the D300 60mm macro lens and an MR2 extension tube. The ratio is about a 1:1, I think it might be a little more than that.

This image was taken last semester for one of my portfolios. The leaves are tapped together with a hot light coming from the right. The background has a hot light with a blue gel pointed at it. I shot this with the 30D at F 4 at 1/60 or 1/30.

Kitchen Detail

In my kitchen there is a window that faces North. There is always really nice light that comes in all morning long. So, Saturday morning I rummaged through all the drawers and cabinets trying to find anything that would spark my "macro interest." These two images turned out to be my favorite. The plug was shot at F 2.8 at 1/8 of a second. The cap was shot at F 11 at 1/16 of a second and both were at ISO 320. I shot these on the D300 with the 105mm macro lens and an extension tube.

This is a macro shot of some stitches on a toe. I used a Nikkormat with a 55mm lens and an extension tube. This is about a 1-2 ratio. This was shot on Fujichrome at 1/125 at f/3.5 with window light.

This is one of my image I'm going to turn in for my macro class this week. I shot this with the D300 and the Nikkor 60mm 2.8 Macro lens. This is a 1 to 1 ratio. So, far I'm having lots of fun experimenting with the new macro equipment.

Over the break I went out with my friends to the Center City Park in Greensboro. It was fun to experiment with balancing flash and available light. This is my favorite image of the ones I took.

My very first composite image

For my digital imaging class the final assignment was to make a composite image. We could do basically do whatever we wanted to do, but the only catch was we had to draw pieces of paper out of a box that had elements written on them. The elements where: human, them, and an object. I drew alpha male, film noir, and delicate textiles. I shot both the woman and man with the Nikon D300 on two separate occasions. I put the man in the front looking directly at the camera to give the dominate feel. Then I composited the woman into the background with varying opacities. This image wasn't entirely my orginal idea but I still like the end result.

I photographed Rob just recently for my portrait portfolio. I used one white lightning and I like how he stands out from the background and the background is still illuminated just enough. The only thing I would change about this image if I was going to re-shoot it would be to use another light on rob. I would like a nice rim light on the right side of him. Other then that I like the image.

Caroline in the Studio

This is the second session for my long term project. I wanted a really simple image so that all of the attention went to Caroline. Just like last time, she did a wonderful job. I shot this with the 5D and I was really amazed at the image quality. It is such a nice camera.

Up Close and Personal

This is one of my photos from an assignment I had this past summer. This assignment was called "Up Close and Personal" because I had to walk up to strangers on the street and convince them to let me take their picture with the camera as close as possible. This was a friend of my boyfriend's that I has just met right after the assignment was given. Since then Rob as become a really good friend of mine and he is now my boyfriend's roommate. I'm going to look for the other images I used for this assignment and I will post them.

This portrait was just for fun. My friend Kin came from Raleigh this weekend and we decided to go on a photo safari. This location is one of the places we ended up finding. It was filled with PVC pipes of all sizes, from big enough for a person to crawl in to small enough to just fit your hand. I liked this image the best. This was shot in open shade with a Nikon D300 at a focal length of 70mm. On a side note...her eyes really are that amazing. I only photoshoped them a little to make them brighter.

Avedon Recreation

For my portrait class we have an assignment to recreate a classic monochrome image. I chose to use Richard Avedon's image a the girl with her hair in the wind. I learned a lot about hair and wind because of this image. I had to have three fans and Susannah Held (a first year student) pull Ashley's hair up so the wind would catch it to get the look I wanted. For Lighting I used a Vivitar 285 with a soft box angled down at Ashley's face. I shot this image with the D300. I'm pretty satisfied with this image. (the top one is Avedon's and the bottom is mine).

Miss Caroline

At 8 o'clock in the morning this past Monday, Caroline and I went to a park in Greensboro. She was a very good model and seemed to know how I wanted her to pose before I could even get the words out. This is going to be for my long term assignment for my portraiture class. For the assignment we have to have three separate photo shoots with the same model and this is only the first one session. I shot this with a D300 using available light.

Spirals

This image is back from this summer when I took Custom Color Print. I took a transparency negative of electric cords on the back of a 18 wheeler. Then I made prints on a color enlarger on RA-4 paper. I used three very different color packs to achieve the different colors in each image. This is one of my favorites.

This is one of my fellow Bio-comm students, Rebecka Fair. This was shot with a Nikon D300 and a 24-85mm lens. For the lighting I used available light and a silver reflector to bounce some light back onto the right side of her face.

Fall Color

For my photojournalism class we have an assignment to photograph the changing of the leaves. One of the requirements is an element in the image has to be a landmark, or something recognizable to at least the locals of where the photo was taken. So, I started out in Battleground Park because that is one of the major parks in Guilford County and would be recognizable to just about anyone. I ended up crossing over to Country Park which is located directly next to Battleground Park. The top one is the one that I ended up turning in.

Broken Cymbal

I used these images for the metal assignment, last 8 weeks, for my Object lighting class. These were shot with my Canon F-1 and I used Ektachrome film. Lighting the cymbals were kind of difficult because of the curvy shape they has. I used one tungsten balanced 750 lights and mini lights that my school's studio has.

Water

I shot this image at the beginning of this semester for one of my classes. The assignment was to photograph water. The theme of the image had to be universally understood as water, so that narrowed down my choice of "props." I ended up using a glass plate filled with water and sat it on a blue gel. I used a Canon 40D at f/22 for 1/320 sec. To freeze the water I used my Vivitar 283, which has a flash duration of up to 1/1000 of a second.

Self Portrait

For my digital class I had an assignment to photograph myself using a lens baby. It was extremely difficult because every time I got up to move the lens around I would somehow change my position when I sat back down. I tried getting people to stand in for me until I got the selective focus I liked, but because of things like height difference, difference in face shape, and so on that wasn't really a great option. I used a Canon 30D.

Obama Rally in Raleigh 10/29/08

I know I will never forget today because it was the first time I ever had the opportunity to see a person running for office, for such a high position. Senator Barrack Obama held a rally in Raleigh today and I decided at the last minute to go with some photography buddies. I was lucky enough to be considered press and had access to two platforms including one that raised up about thirty feet in the air. The atmosphere was amazing and I had such an adrenalin rush. I used a Canon 30D at the rally. I switched back and forth between a 24-105mm and a 70-200mm lens.

Senator Joe Biden was at Meredith College in Raleigh this past Thursday. For my photojournalism class we receive extra credit for covering anything political, so I decided to go check things out. I decided to not get a media pass and I ended up being less than a foot from Biden when he entered the amphitheater. It was pretty exciting to be at a rally with over 7,000 people. For this image I walked to the top of the amphitheater and used a Nikon D200 with a 80-200mm lens.

pharmaceutical frustration

This image was taken last 8 weeks for my Bio-communication Object lighting class. The assignment was to photograph anything that had to do with the pharmaceutical industry. The reason I chose to go in the direction I did is because I think a lot of people are way to dependent on over the counter drugs. I used tungsten balanced hot lights. For this image, one 750 was placed to the left of the camera, about a foot above the model's head. I also used a diffusion screen in front of the light to the left.
